Emergency Generators

Generators come in many different shapes and sizes. Purchasing the best generator for you is determined by your individual power supply needs in emergencies. The more you plan to plugin on your generator, the bigger and more expensive it will be.

There are Two Types of Generators

Permanent standby generators - These generators are installed as part of your electrical system and provide a power source to the structure's (your home) wiring. Usually there is an automatic switch that prevents the generator from back feeding any power into utility lines (and protects it from any damage when your power is restored). Permanent standby generators should only be installed by a licensed professional electrician. The city or county building department must inspect the switches and wiring to make sure it's up to code standards.

Portable Generators - These are usually used when only a limited amount of vital electrical sources are needed. For example TV, radio, refrigerator, and (water) pumps. Most homes will generally require a 5,000 watt generator. It's also important to get the generator that is adequately sized for your needs. Some electrical motors in home appliances and equipment can be ruined or damaged if they do not receive enough electrical current.

Before You Buy

Total the watts that are needed to supply the items you wish to power. Also determine how long you you want to be able to run these items. This will tell you exactly what size generator is required.
